Steve Hall is a Titanic researcher, historian, author and adventure novelist. A Honorary member of the British Titanic Society, a foundation member of the Titanic & Steamship Historical Society of Australia and a former trustee of the (TRMA) Titanic Research & Modeling Association (1998 - 2008).

  He has co-authored seven books with Bruce Beveridge; ‘the most writings by a co-author team in the Titanic field to date. The two men also write magazine, and periodical pieces for Titanic groups and Societies around the world.’ They have appeared / contributed to numerous TV documentaries including Rebuilding Titanic (Nat./Geo.), Titanic The Mission (UK Channel 4), Was The Titanic Sank? (Mentorn) and Save The Titanic (Nat./Geo.).

  In Oct. 2012, Blue Star Line Chairman Clive Palmer appointed him as Design Consultant & Historian to the Titanic II project; working alongside Deltamarin Ltd - (Finnish-based naval architecture and engineering firm) and CSC Jinling - CSC Jinling Shipyard (China) to review key design and comparative analysis relevant for the new ship (October 2012 - June 2013).

  Titanic Replica (Sichuan Province, Chengdu, China). Bruce Beveridge (Design Supervisor), Daniel Klistorner (Interior Design Consultant / Fitting Out) and Steve Hall (Historical Advisor / Documentarian, media).   Titanic - The Ship Magnificent

   It is Titanic’s close association with her older sister Olympic that brought about the title of this book. Maritime historians will immediately recognize “The Ship Magnificent” as the advertising phrase used for Olympic in White Star Line brochures later in her career. Such catch phrases were created for some of the other great liners as well. Because Titanic’s career was cut short on the morning of April 15, 1912, after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic on her maiden voyage, she never had the opportunity to carry such a phrase of distinction. Given the fact that these two ships were near-identical twins, Olympic’s catch phrase has been used as the title for this book. Titanic - The Ship Magnificent is a comprehensive book about all aspects of the actual ship itself. It does not delve into accounts of her passengers, nor does it detail the ship’s sinking. Many books have done that well, and in great detail. Since the day Titanic passed into history, people have been writing books about the circumstances surrounding the loss of this great ship.    What began as a collaborative undertaking by a group of researchers from all parts of the world in 2010 has culminated into this book. The book is the result of many years spent researching, evaluating and analyzing the wealth of evidence that has come to light in the hundred years since 1912.

  No individual historian can possibly be an expert on every aspect of his chosen topic, and - as a result - historical errors have a way of creeping into written histories covering most historical subjects. This has been especially true in the case of the Titanic disaster - a subject that has seen a century's worth of historical errors, misconceptions and outright deceptions gradually become an accepted part of the historical record. Indeed, such errors first began making their appearance during the official Titanic inquiries in 1912, when the vast body of testimony - and a lack of sufficient time to digest or analyze that testimony - resulted in a number of erroneous conclusions being made.

  The present book is a radical departure from that early tradition, since it has been written by a coalition of experts who have spent many years digesting the original inquiry testimony as well as evaluating a bounty of additional evidence that has come to light in the hundred years since 1912.    "Conspiracies suggest deception and intrigue, and none is quite as intriguing as the idea that the White Star Line pulled off such a massive cover-up. However, dismissing such a claim out of hand is not enough. It requires rigorous analysis by researchers who have the relevant expertise and objectivity to assess it. It demands examination of the all the claims put forward point by point, by looking at the evidence and seeing whether it supports them. Moreover, it demands that the evidence be presented in such a way that the non-technical layperson can assess it for himself.
   If such a theory is absurd, then why is it necessary to examine it in such detail? Might not a conspiracy theorist simply dismiss such a critical analysis in any case? Perhaps so, but a detailed analysis also provides a service to the intelligent layman by pointing to the specific problems with the theory. There is much to be said for ignoring it – few would debate seriously with the argument that the earth is flat – but any theory should be assessed objectively by examining whether there is any evidential basis for it. While this volume looks for flaws in the conspiracy theory, it also provides a lot of historical information. It documents the hundreds of differences between Olympic and Titanic, all of which must be considered in answering the question ‘could it have really happened?'
   When someone puts forward an idea or theory, then it is incumbent on them to prove it. There will always be people who believe what they want to believe, rather than what can be demonstrated to have happened, but that is their choice. Herein lie the facts – decide for yourself.The theory is far-fetched, and yet – is it possible?"

   "Perhaps the best proof that a switch did not happen lies in the argument used by the conspiracy theorists - that it was done to cash in on an insurance claim. That in itself makes the theory illogical, because the fact remains that Titanic was seriously underinsured once fully furnished and fitted out. Both ships, in fact, were insured for considerably less than their build costs. Each vessel, fully equipped, cost £1,500,000.

   At the time of the accident the vessel carried insurance of £1,000,000, with the remaining risk being carried by the company’s insurance fund. There simply was no profit in sinking Titanic on purpose, and even if there were, an elaborate switch scheme would have been unnecessary. One man, one box of matches and a drum of lamp oil is all that would have been needed. Imagine this scenario: on 30 February 1912, while en route to Belfast for replacement of a propeller blade with a limited crew aboard, Olympic catches fire. Uncontained, the fire becomes a raging inferno fuelled by the vast amounts of furniture and joinery aboard. The crew is forced to abandon ship - this time with no loss of life, as there are plenty of lifeboats to go around. The fire burns for several days unabated, totally gutting the ship. The hulk is then towed back to Belfast and later declared a total write-off. The newspaper headlines read ‘Olympic lost to fire; investigation underway to determine cause’. The insurance companies pay out and the hulk is scrapped. End of story. But as we have learned, even this scenario is untenable, as the ships were vastly uninsured."

   Titanic In Photographs brings together many little-known and unpublished photographs. This hardcover, coffee-table size book focus's principally on Titanic’s photographic record; comprehensive accompanying text for each individual image and colour section. Through a chronological sequence, the book follows the ships construction, launch, outfitting, trials and departure from Queenstown. The book is 10in x 10in in size (25cm x 25cm), hardcover, and totals 176 ages (including a 16 page colour section) using 298 black-an-white photographs, some printed across two pages. The authors have source'd original prints or scans from original glass-plate negatives for many of the images, which means that many appear in this book  in a higher resolution than had ever been seen in print; some have never been seen before.

There is an image of Titanic on her sea trials: a thick wreath of smoke is seen emanating from one of her tugs, blowing across Titanic’s stern as the tug strains to lead the leviathan -

into the open waters of Belfast Lough. Little imagination is required to feel the pride and the anticipation of the day as ship and crew head out to put the largest and newest passenger liner through her paces.

  Titanic continues to generate interest and no other ship in history has ever commanded such attention. Yet comparatively few photos were ever taken of her and today all we have is a partial record of black and white photographs taken by a few individuals lucky enough to have captured images of the ship that would later become so famous. We owe much of our knowledge of Titanic’s construction to the visual record compiled by a small group of photographers operating at Harland & Wolff. Foremost among these is Robert John Welch, the official Harland & Wolff photographer at the time. His initials can be seen on many glass-plate photographs of Titanic.    This Until 1985, the wreck of the Titanic was a much sought after prize many considered equal to the quest for Holy Grail. Over 300 books had been published covering the disaster from every conceivable angle.    On September 20 1911, the Titanic's older sister Olympic, sailed from Southampton England. Within the hour a collision occurred, allegedly compromising the liners structural integrity. Did the Olympic suffer from damage that was so severe that she was not worth repairing?    The theory holds that severe, crippling damage to the Olympic caused by her collision with the H.M.S. Hawke was concealed because she was too costly to repair. The White Star Line was unable to recover the cost of repairs from the Admiralty as the judgment of the court ordered that both party’s pay there own damages. With a considerable loss in revenue, compiled with an insurance deductible of some $750,000, White Star switched the Olympic with her almost identical sister, Titanic !

   Olympic & Titanic: The Truth Behind The Conspiracy explores the switch theory, addresses evidence and gives the final answer to the intriguing question of which ship actually lies on the bottom of the North Atlantic today. Inaccurate stories are not new.Which ship rests at the bottom of the Nth Atlantic ? This book takes a critical look at the theory and goes into amazing detail identifying the hundreds of minor subtle differences between the two ships.   Passenger areas recreated will feature the grandeur of the ships grand staircase, the 1st class dining saloon, B deck parlor suites, examples of a 2nd class and 3rd class cabins as well as Turkish Baths and gymnasium. Much debate occurred over what had to be changed with the exterior appearance of Titanic 2 so as to make her look closer to that of the original Titanic (raising funnel and mast heights, and shifting the leading edges of superstructure decks). Among the visual effects to give the appearance of sheer were modifications to the sheer strakes of the bow and stern and their interaction with the sheerless midsection.

  There were many compromises which had to be made. The biggest roadblock to historical accuracy were the Chinese marine fire codes, and the Chinese requirements for lifesaving. CSIC is building Titanic 2 to cruise ship specifications and therefor the Chinese version of SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea). Hong Kong is a signatory member state of SOLAS, but mainland China is another issue that is beyond the scope of this article."
